On April 17 th , 2024, two extraordinary events occurred: The 500 th anniversary of Giovanni da
Verrazzano’s arrival to New York Bay, and an official proclamation designating that historic date,
April 17 th , as Giovanni da Verrazzano day. Thanks to the efforts of Governor Kathy Hochul and
Angelo Vivolo (IALF Founding member and past president of CCF), this remarkable feat was
accomplished. Verrazzano’s indomitable spirit is embodied by the millions of Italian Americans
who emigrated from Italy to the United States many long years ago, and their descendants who
prosper here to this day.
To commemorate the occasion, a stellar program of distinguished speakers and their audience
gathered at the Verrazzano statue on an overcast day in Battery Park (thankfully, the weather
held). Welcoming remarks were delivered by Angelo Vivolo and followed by a moving speech
from Governor Hochul. The Consul Generals of both Italy and France paid homage to the
explorer’s heritage and benefactor, respectively. Michael G. Polo, chair of the Italian American
Leadership Forum (IALF), concluded with a rousing call to celebration.
A small lunch was held nearby where participants gathered and reflected upon what was truly
an auspicious moment, mirroring one day five hundred years ago when Verrazzano himself
became the first European to eye the glory of New York Bay.
