On Wednesday, January 13, Michele Bogart provided a fascinating exploration of how and why public art and monuments began to appear in Central Park. For all the virtues of a pristine, cultivated landscape to provide an escape from the rapidly expanding city, monuments began to appear not too long after Central Park opened to the public. Our views are evolving about public commemoration and scholar Michele Bogart took us on a journey to understand some of the decisions that shape the park that so defines the image of our city.
